Advice to someone interested in pursuing a similar career:
Becoming a employment relations / human capital professional requires specific career planning, passion, and commitment. It is not a career that you happen to stumble upon. It is more important to have emotional intelligence skills including listening and communicating with empathy, problem solving, critical thinking, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills among others. Although ideal and essential, degrees will not necessarily set you apart in becoming a great HR professional. There are many areas of specialisation in HR and then there is a generalist approach. It is important to firstly be committed to pursuing the field, and then if possible, identifying a niche area that is perfectly aligned to your strengths e.g. labour relations, recruitment, rewards and benefits, training and development etc.
